New Moon Through the Houses
Tarot Signification for the Lunation Cycle
At the New Moon there is darkness it is the transition from the dark moon of the old cycle to a rising of light. Here is her darkness and in the earth seeds germinate under the soil out of sight. At this time we can allow our imaginations to collect seeds of intention and plant them for this new cycle to grow, flower and fruit during the month ahead lunation cycle. Seeds which contain the sweet berries we can later savour or the imagined outcome for a relationship, job, purpose or project. Along with intentional seeds there are some which contain weeds, unintentionally planted or dropped by birds and the winds. So it is with our imaginal seeds, our memories, shadows and conditioning can plant the unintended which will grow alongside.
Significations of the Moon
The Moon is a daily reflection of fortune as we flow, or sometimes stumble, through out day. As we wake up and engage in morning routines then to work, at home or at another location, our minds switch gears according to what we are doing our minds, emotions, moods and bodies change as do our circumstances. Whether we encounter mishap or ease during our days we flow from morning, noon and to night. The Moon signifies among other things, our bodies, mothers, women, home and family, our neighbourhood whether town or village. She also signifies our ancestry and those we consider our tribe. She is, in Cancer, what we devote ourselves to and what we nurture.
Themes of Cancer
When the Goddess is in her Temple in Cancer, the Zodiac sign she rules, we have the Summer Solstice and the light although dominant is beginning to diminish as the daylight hours become increasingly shorter. The Sun has reached it’s peak in the sky and will begin to take shorter arcs across our sky. Cancer in Ancient Astrology is known as the Gateway of Soul and denotes the passing of the soul into the mothers womb, into material. Capricorn sitting opposite, where dark is dominant and light is increasing, is known as the Gateway of the Gods where the Soul ascends and returns back to Source, you can think of the womb as the way in to the material and tomb as the way out! When we think about life and light what we often forget is dark and death but both are crucial as is day and night. Edgar Casey spoke of our soul/spirit coming to earth to delight in the ability to experience the material through the five senses, according to Casey this was a time we could float in and out of the physical but we became enamoured of it and forgot we were souls and thought our bodies were us, our essence. This at the very least is a beautiful metaphor for embodiment through the Gateway of the Soul. So with Cancer we seek safety, nurture, nourishment and we can experience a clinginess as a child does to a mother and it is through exploring these themes we can discover both our shadow and our light. Cancer also has themes of embodiment, sensuality and compassion the Mother Earth energies. It also brings those who embody both the archetypes of mother and child, being both maternal and child-like and a strong sense of gaining self-esteem through being needed. They often possess deep emotional intelligence and creativity and are lovers of the embodied world, reflective and often contemplative.
Aspects Of The New Moon
Sun, Moon and Jupiter Conjunction
“ A positive and expansive nature, an outpouring vitality and enthusiasm, feeling of abundance and satisfaction, the joy of living, grand dramatic flair. Tendencies toward arrogance and self-righteousness, attitudes of entitlement in many areas of life, habitual excesses.” - Ren Butler The Archetypal Universe.
A few hours before the New Moon there will be a Jupiter Cazimi, where the Sun and Jupiter join. It signifies the death and rebirth of Jupiter, the yearly reset of the Sun and Jupiter’s synodic cycle. Jupiter will spend the full year in Cancer and it is a place in which it is exulted, Jupiter is happy, fertile, abundant and expansive in Cancer and easily brings his beneficial effects. Jupiter is not unlike a very large net that catches whole shoals of fish, whatever the net is aimed at it will work to include more and more of, so watch out if you cast your net over excess you will have abundance of over spend, expanding waistline or arrogance! Jupiter is not unlike glue that seeks to hold society together, it signifies the Law and the legal system as well as those in power and Jupiter is reborn in the sign of nurture, devotion and the body/material and so throughout the year, we may find legal challenges to Institutions and Governments that are harsh or detrimental to the greater good of people, seeded at this New Moon. The house that Jupiter sits in will highlight the themes and topics that will be indicated through a year long transit. Jupiter is know as the Greater Benefic and tends to bring an ease and flow to that part of the Birth Chart (see below for house topics)
The above aspects are also in square to the Saturn and Neptune Conjunction in Aries, bringing fire and water into tension this New Moon. Where Jupiter in Cancer is bringing flow and ease and optimism, Saturn is likely to bring a sense of heaviness and limitation. If we align to and hold both the expansional nature of Jupiter and the discipline of Saturn we will be enabled to move across thresholds and into a quiet centeredness. It is from this place that those things we desire can be embodied; our imaginal seeds, spiritual selves and ideas can be nurtured and bought into the material as concrete and useful offerings for ourselves, families and communities. Saturn brings strong boundaries and Neptune is that oceanic desire for boundlessness connection. Between these polarities lie thresholds and liminal spaces which can become deeply creative places not unlike a wetland or coral reef where biodiversity is born and thrives. Where we have been frustrated by limitation or lost in a sea of escapism the exercise of mature detachment enables us to look at things more objectively and can bring wisdom, forgiveness and a practical compassion which is not only beneficial to ourselves but to all we relate to.
Sabian Symbol For The New Moon
A poignant Sabian Symbol with the juxtaposition of the individual will and the collective, with Jupiter the planet that wants to brings a broadening experience and integration into larger wholes. It is the notion that our individual needs can collide with the needs of the wider group and a way forward is to be found in holding the tension of both these thing to avoid ‘breaking the law’ of Jupiter. We are individuals within a collective and the New Moon conjunction with Jupiter along with the square to Saturn brings the notion of a creative tension between Jupiter’s drive to bring diverse parts into one whole and Saturn’s gift of boundaries and discipline which moves us into a deeper contemplative wisdom.
“CANCER 5°: AT A RAILROAD CROSSING, AN AUTOMOBILE IS WRECKED BY A TRAIN.
KEYNOTE: The tragic results which are likely to occur when the individuals will pits itself carelessly against the power of the collective will of society .
The automobile symbolizes the individualized consciousness eager to pursue its own course of action regardless of how it may conflict with the collective consciousness of the community (the train). The symbol implies that at this early stage of the new process which began with this seventh scene, all such individual and relatively anarchistic or law-defying attempts are bound to fail. The driver may live, but his car will be wrecked.
Lest we consider this phase totally negative, we should realize that most of the time man learns his lessons through relatively destructive experiences—the via negativa of the mystic, or even the strange occult concept expounded in some sects of “salvation through sin.” One may speak here more generally of KARMIC readjustment.” An Astrological Mandala - Dane Rudhyar
New Moon in the 1st House - Cancer
The focus during this New Moon will be personal and subjective you may feel the need to belong and relate to those you love. Feelings of emotional sensitivity towards others and their moods and feelings may be felt deeply by you. Be aware of this sensitivity and whilst objectivity may be out of reach at the time of the New Moon it is a wonderful opportunity to tap into your innate sense of nurture and emotional intelligence and use this to support others whom need it or for you - pamper yourself. Be aware of the possibility of becoming emotionally demanding or others demanding from you. This may be expanded by Jupiter being conjunct this New Moon and with Saturn and Neptune sitting in your 10th house of career there could be some pushing and pulling of boundaries in the workplace bringing set backs to those projects you have initiated. However this creative tension will support you to sort through feelings of uncertainty and self-doubt and bring fertile ground for innovative solutions where you feel external or internal limitations. Ensure you have the space to reflect with mature detachment rather than react purely from frustration - the no of Saturn is not a no to our dreams it is a push to build the reality.
New Moon in the 2nd House - Gemini
Sitting in the house of money, resources and values, it is a fortunate time with the benevolent Jupiter shining on money issues! This is the time to get excited about your resources and how they can be used to bring in the changes that you need to make to become well resourced and abundant. With the New Moon sitting in Cancer there may be intuitive insights into how to move in terms of income, expenditure, investments. Be careful because Jupiter can also bring excess of spending and a misplaced optimism leading to a deficit! Use the time to question your emotional attachment to your money and the things that you own. Is there a better way to invest or direct your resources or are you sticking with what gives you a sense of safety? Investigate your relationship with your material resources, ask if your investments and spending match with your values and ethics, are you overspending or is your generosity depleting your finances too much? Saturn and Neptune in Aries your 11th house, is square to this lunation and there may well be tension between you and a benefactor who has supported you with your finances, resources or hopes and dreams. There may be boundaries crossed that are a mismatch to either your values and ethics or theirs and there could be a gradual limitation of the level of support they are willing to offer. Be creative with problem solving, your ruling planet Mercury, co-present with the New Moon in Cancer, is a whizz when it comes to trade and market places he may have some messages you can intuitively hear but also listen to the ‘No’ of Saturn and seek good advice.
New Moon in the 3rd House - Taurus Sun Moon and Rising
Your communication with others is likely to be very subjective and have emotional depth. You may be experiencing deep feelings of care and nurture towards others as you speak and have a the gift of generous encouragement or compliment! Venus is sitting in her Temple in your sign and so the push toward relating authentically and have genuine, deep discussions in order to bring balance and harmony in your relationships, may be an overwhelming need for you at this time. Don’t hold back, important issues can be solved and put to bed. You may also feel avoidant of conversations that are superficial and hold little or no meaning or purpose to you. You could be feeling vulnerable and become effected by things that others say as you go about your everyday life. Be aware of this emotional stimuli and think before reacting so as not to upset your siblings, neighbours and those you come into contact with in your every day life. You will see them tomorrow and they will have a better impression of you if your communication is conscious rather than automatic. This is particularly important as Saturn and Neptune sit in your 12th house which can relate to the unconscious or conditioned self- sabotaging behaviours. Bring conscious awareness to conversations that illicit an emotional response from you and Jupiter will bring personal growth and healing to things that otherwise may have remained hidden. Remain alert to stepping across others boundaries and emotional knee jerk reactions. Jupiter cazimi has reset and this may bring fruitful interactions with neighbours and those in your local community which will bring rewards throughout the next year as the benevolent planet travels through your 3rd house.
New Moon in the 4th House - Aries Sun Moon and Rising
This will be an important turning point for Aries as the New Moon and Jupiter’s reset in your 4th house of home, family and foundations is square to Saturn and Neptune in your 1st house. It is a good time to reflect upon your relationship and attitude to the world around you and understand the tension between limitation and growth which this New Moon will bring. Inner work to understand the boundaries you have for yourself, family and those of the outside world will bring fruitful outcomes for you. You may find yourself expanding your home with an extension, moving to a larger property or your family may increase during Jupiter’s transit over the following year. You may decide to start or move your working life into the home. The intentions that you set for themes around the 4th house at the New Moon, will continue to grow throughout the year. Inner work around family karmic patterns and releasing those things which limit you will be blessed by the benevolent Jupiter throughout the year. You will benefit from explorations of familial and societal conditioning or habits to make the unconscious conscious and break with long held patterns of behaviour. This may come about through confrontation within the home which help you understand that your words or actions are inappropriate. Jupiter will lend support to both inner and ancestral work which in time may yield some surprising information that changes how you see both yourself and the world around you. Establishing a spiritual or contemplative practice will also be beneficial at this time.
New Moon in the 5th House - Pisces Sun Moon and Rising
Fertility, abundance and growth will be evident this coming year around the themes of children, creativity, pleasure and sexuality. The 5th house, the joy of Venus, brings all things pleasurable, beautiful and harmonious! The New Moon will kick off a year of fertility for the things you intend and perhaps those things you didn’t! If you do not want to create children this year take precautions as pregnancy is on the cards. Entrepreneurs will have a boost to both their creativity and success but be careful not to get carried away with optimism and promise more than you are unable to deliver. With Saturn and Neptune square the New Moon in your second house of money and resources their may be tensions between your ideals and big plans with the reality of time, energy and resources. Use Saturn to plan and build solid foundations for all your endeavours whether it is the creation of a child or a business, imagine and dream big but maintain balance, particularly with your finances and resources, including your time. If you are intending to build a spiritual business the cosmos is right behind you. Set your intentions for this New Moon with big imagination and realistic goals that you can consistently maintain. Emotional depth with lovers will bring an intensity but watch for those feelings growing into obsession or possessiveness and for the tendency to be so overwhelmed with your feelings that you overlook those of your lover. Whatever your intentions this New Moon tap into your creativity and remember that Jupiter will bring fertility, growth and abundance but don’t forget he also brings excess, self-righteousness and a sense of entitlement.
New Moon in the 6th House - Aquarius Sun Moon and Rising
Squaring this New Moon is your Ruler Saturn sitting in a conjunction with Neptune in Aries your third house. You may find there are issues with neighbours around literal boundaries with your home or property. This may bring conflict but with the benevolent Jupiter sitting in your sixth house, you will have the capacity and willingness to work with your neighbours to bring a meaningful conclusion without legal involvement. If this process is already at the Courts, the outcome is likely to be favourable. Your focus will be on the practicalities of life rather than emotional considerations but be wary of repressing feelings and instead find a healthy outlet to express them. This is a good time to turn your attention to your home and the personal aspects of your life. Reorganising your home to become more functional for you and your family would be an excellent use of time as would focusing on a new health regime whether that be exercise or healthy eating. Jupiter in this house bodes well for focus upon your health but it can also be an expansion of health issue or your weight. Work or creative projects from your home will be well supported and if you have been thinking of a new business from home this is an ideal time to set it into action as Jupiter transiting here is likely to bring fertile growth throughout the year if you remain focused and work hard. A new lover may be just around the corner. You may find that loved ones and partners are much more important to you during this new moon and that you are understanding their contributions towards your sense of security and of feeling supported. Be aware also that if you are in an emotionally negative space, Jupiter’s expansive qualities may bring feelings of insecurity or over protectiveness and flare ups could be likely. Try to put space between those feelings and your reaction, if they arise, and look objectively at the situation. With your chart Ruler Saturn sitting in the forth house of home family roots, you will have the ability to be both disciplined with your emotions and your inner work. Find time for inner reflection of your emotional connections to your partner and family members and contemplate the year ahead and how you would like those relationships to grow and flourish. It may be that you are feeling bored with the everyday mundane routine of life and are experiencing a tension between the need for material security and an internal call to adventure. If you are unable to physically travel to distant shores, this is a good time to find ways to travel in your mind. Topics such as different cultures, philosophy’s or religions may be a vessel to satisfy your need to expand your horizons, as will inner journeying through shamanic ritual or deep contemplative practises. A pilgrimage is not always through the land. The New Moon conjunct Jupiter is transiting your 10th house which will bring emotion, growth and fertility to your public face within your work or activities outside your private space. You may have a tendency to emotional display in public which could be beneficial as in the case of a heightened sensitivity towards your work colleagues or negative connotations if it were a public argument with your mother or your boss! With Jupiter sitting here for the following year the seeds that are sown at this New Moon are likely to be very fertile and bring a full harvest which could include a promotion at work or an achievement which may gain you public recognition over this year. The square to Saturn and Neptune in Aries is in your 7th house bringing a focus and tension between your public life and your more intimate relationships. There could be tension between work and relationship or boundaries around the amount of time and energy you are giving to either area. There can be long term gains if these are approached with a sensitivity towards yourself, boss and partner and compromises are reached which are inclusive and beneficial to all. The energy is that of walking a tightrope and focusing on bringing balance to whatever issues may arise. Venus the Ruler of your chart is transiting Taurus its Temple and has a strong capacity to bring about the themes around other peoples money, particularly that of a partner, who may receive an inheritance. With Venus moving into a conjunction with Uranus at the last degree of Taurus the following week, there may well be a conclusion to debts or probate/legal process. Venus in a whole sign sextile to the New Moon and Jupiter cazimi can bring harmony and balance to the heightened emotions or sensitivity you may experience during the New Moon. New Moon in the 11th House - Virgo Sun Moon and Rising
All the action of this transit is in the 11th house, called by Ancient Astrologers the house of good fortune the Joy of Jupiter and sitting in Cancer is the Moon in her Temple along with the Sun, Jupiter and Mercury the Ruler of your first house. These are very good omens and with an exulted Jupiter continuing his year long transit through the house of his joy, fortune is shining brightly in your favour. Two days after the New Moon Mercury will enter Leo your twelfth house where his messages may not be quite so clear so listen well for the details and communication he will be bringing you before he departs to the underworld of the twelfth where things are somewhat hidden. During the New Moon you will be gifted with the ability to imagine and dream big with Mercury supplying the details for the seeds to sow. You may find in social settings a plethora of willing allies to support you with opportunities to advance your hopes, dreams, ambitions and actions in the world. There may be a long awaited resource appearing for you this year as Jupiter continues his journey through Cancer bringing people who have power, offering gifts of patronage or finances. This may appear through struggles you have with your limitations, materially or personally as Saturn and Neptune are in a square to this New Moon bringing a level of tension that requires action to move beyond. See any obstacles or challenges as opportunities to develop internally and creatively. If your dreams, hopes and wishes are not matched by your finances, skills or abilities there is much to indicate that these gaps will be fulfilled with those whom are more than willing to support you. Speak your truth but speak it with love and empathy, have those deep conversations with friends and those in your social sphere and you may attract the right support that is needed at this time.
New Moon in the 12th House - Leo Sun Moon and Rising
The New Moon in your twelfth house will be a time to truly appreciate the seeds which are being sown in the darkness. You may experience a time of isolation either literal or metaphorically, but with Jupiter here you will find the ability to dig deep and find optimism within any difficulties you are struggling with. This is a good time to be alone and face any aspect or shadow within you that you have previously been reluctant to face. With Saturn and Neptune in Aries 9th house squaring the New Moon feelings may fluctuate between outpouring and repression, but with discipline you will be able to identify those things that have lain hidden and find wisdom and emotional maturity - your treasures in the darkness. This an excellent time to begin a spiritual or mystical practise or find a mentor to support you in a Jungian descent to soul or vision quest. With an exulted Jupiter remaining in a whole sign square to Saturn and Neptune, as he transits your 12th house there will be fertile ground in examining your beliefs and seeking the truth about yourself and others. You may find throughout the year of this transit enemies which were once hidden revealed, be they others or a part of yourself. Be wary of escapism by the use of alcohol or drugs but also be aware that plant medicine into altered states facilitated by Shamans would be an opportunity to seek the truth of life, as would silent retreats, sweat lodges and any spiritual experience with the intention of healing. Pilgrimages and long journeys to broaden your experience with spirituality and diverse cultures could also be beneficial at this time as would a regular habit of meditation and contemplation. Be prepared for an abundant harvest from the seeds you sow at this New Moon after Jupiter has finished his year long journey through Cancer and know that the work you do may be hidden but will become plain when Jupiter finally moves into your first house next year and expresses through your character and all that you are.
